Brassavola grandiflora is a striking epiphytic orchid native to Central America and northern South America. It typically inhabits lowland and montane tropical forests, growing on tree trunks and large branches where it benefits from bright, filtered light and excellent air circulation. The plant is characterized by long, cylindrical leaves that emerge from pseudobulbs, and produces large, showy white flowers with narrow, elongated petals and sepals surrounding a broad, heart-shaped labellum. The blooms are highly fragrant, especially at night, releasing a sweet, citrus-like scent that attracts nocturnal moth pollinators. Its elegant floral form and intoxicating fragrance make it a popular species in orchid collections, as well as a parent in hybridization programs to impart scent and resilience. Photographed in Panama.
