Hanging clusters of Brachyotum flowers have red cups and dark purple petals among deeply veined glossy green leaves

Brachyotum microdon

Native to central South America, this woody shrub grows in Andean mountain vegetation. Its oval to oblong leaves have prominent veins and stiff hairs. Hanging flowers have red outer cups and dark purple petals that overlap to form a tube. Small glands on the anthers release nectar, providing a reward for hummingbirds. After flowering, dry capsules develop with numerous tiny seeds. Photographed in southern Peru.
