A dense Bomarea formosissima cluster has hanging tubular flowers with red outer tepals, yellow-orange inner petals, and dark anthers

Bomarea formosissima

Native from central Peru to central Bolivia, this perennial vine grows from underground stems and climbs by twining, with stems about 7 to 26 feet long. It inhabits scrub and cloud forests in the Peruvian and Bolivian Andes, often near the upper tree line. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves alternate along robust stems that may become hairy toward the tips. Dense flower clusters often contain more than 50 blooms. Each flower is about 1 to 1.5 inches long, with red outer tepals and orange inner tepals marked with dark spots. Photographed in Peru.
