Bomarea bracteata
Native to Peru and restricted to Andean regions, Bomarea bracteata is a twining, tuberous perennial. The flowers are characteristically bicolored: an elongated red tube that transitions to outward-facing green lobes densely spotted inside; the outer surfaces often show a fine farinose bloom. Bracts at the base of pedicels are conspicuous—hence the epithet bracteata—and buds develop as ovoid, green, somewhat inflated structures before the corolla expands. After flowering, the plant produces a dehiscent capsule; when the capsule opens, it exposes multiple glossy seeds encased in a bright, fleshy sarcotesta that is readily visible. Photographed in Peru.
