Bejaria resinosa
Native to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela, this Andean shrub grows in páramo and subpáramo habitats and can reach about 10 feet tall. In Colombia, it occurs between about 5,700 and 12,800 feet. Its red-purple flowers vary in stickiness: some plants have sticky petals and sepals, while others do not. The sticky surfaces trap insects and help defend flowers against herbivores. Bumblebees and hummingbirds visit the flowers, while flowerpiercer birds can rob their nectar. Photographed at the Páramo de Berlín, Colombia, above 11,000 feet.
