Native to Palau and the Mariana Islands, Breadfruit thrives in equatorial lowlands, the yield and quality of its fruit diminish in cooler climates. This plant is distributed within its natural range by fruit bats. The breadfruit tree is believed to be a domesticated descendant of Artocarpus camansi its introduction to Oceania was facilitated through the Austronesian expansion​. The fruit it bears is a staple food in the South Pacific and notably for its substantial starch content and versatile in preparation. This potato-like fruit is called frutipan in Colombia and is rarely for sale. Photographed in the department of Magdalena, Colombia.
