Arachis glabrata, commonly known as perennial peanut, is native to Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina, where it thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. This low-growing, rhizomatous legume belongs to the Fabaceae family and is valued for its vibrant golden-yellow flowers that resemble those of the cultivated peanut, with a prominent banner petal and smaller keel petals folded below. It is well-adapted to a variety of soils, including sandy and moderately acidic conditions, and demonstrates high drought tolerance once established. In its native range, it grows in open grasslands, savannas, and lightly wooded areas, often forming dense mats that help prevent soil erosion. Arachis glabrata is also widely used as a forage crop due to its high protein content and palatability for livestock, as well as for ornamental groundcover in landscaping.
