Aphelandra squarrosa (Zebra Plant)

Native to northeastern and southeastern Brazil, this evergreen shrub can reach about 6 feet tall, though plants grown indoors usually stay smaller. Its glossy dark green leaves have bold white or silver veins that give it the appearance of zebra stripes. Yellow tubular flowers emerge from a dense spike of waxy yellow bracts, sometimes tinted maroon. It can flower intermittently throughout the year and is widely grown as a houseplant for both its foliage and flowers. The sap can irritate skin. Photographed in the department of Quindio, Colombia.
