Antidesma bunius bears a dense hanging cluster of glossy red fruits among dark green leaves

Antidesma bunius (Bignay)

Native to tropical and subtropical Asia and New Guinea, this tree grows in wet tropical habitats and commonly develops branches near the base of its trunk. Male and female flowers usually occur on separate trees. The small fruits ripen unevenly along their clusters, changing from yellowish-red to deep bluish-violet. Their juicy pulp is used to make jams, jellies, drinks and wine. It has been introduced to Hawaii and the Mariana and Society islands. Photographed in Colombia.
