Anthurium scherzerianum

Endemic to Costa Rica, this evergreen perennial herb grows in clumps on trees or on the ground in montane rainforests, between about 4,300 and 6,900 feet. It usually reaches about 1 foot tall. Its distinctive orange-red spadix coils like a corkscrew beside a scarlet or orange-red spathe; the tiny true flowers cover the spadix. It can flower intermittently throughout the year, and its long-lasting flowering stems are used in arrangements. The species has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. All parts are harmful if eaten, and the sap can irritate skin and eyes. Photographed in the department of Antioquia, Colombia.
