Large pink spadix and hooded spathe of Anthurium cupulispathum emerging beneath massive green leaves in a tropical forest
Anthurium cupulispathum

Anthurium cupulispathum is a rare species in the Araceae family, native to humid montane forests of Ecuador and Colombia, often found at elevations between 4,000 and 7,000 feet. It is distinguished by its striking inflorescence, featuring a large, cylindrical spadix covered in tightly packed minute flowers, partially enclosed by a curved, cup-like spathe that can range from deep pink to reddish-purple. The species thrives under the shade of the forest canopy, where constant moisture, filtered light, and rich organic soils provide ideal conditions for growth. Its massive leaves, often exceeding two feet in length, help the plant capture light in dense understory environments, while the spathe’s vivid coloration attracts pollinators such as beetles, which are common in Araceae pollination systems. Photographed in Ecuador.
