White and dark purple berries project from an Anthurium crystallinum fruiting spike beside narrow green spathes

Anthurium crystallinum

Native to Panama and Colombia, this evergreen perennial herb grows on trees in wet tropical forests. It is cultivated chiefly for its velvety leaves, marked by striking silver-white veins. The modest green spathe surrounds a yellow spadix covered with tiny flowers, which can appear intermittently throughout the year. These develop into purple berries tinged with white. The species has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. It is harmful if eaten, and its sap can irritate skin and eyes. Photographed in the department of Risaralda, Colombia.
