Anisacanthus wrightii
Native to Texas and northern Mexico, Anisacanthus wrightii is a heat- and drought-tolerant shrub adapted to arid and semi-arid landscapes. It thrives in rocky slopes, canyons, and open scrub, often in limestone-rich soils, and is valued for its ability to bloom profusely in the hottest months when many other plants are dormant. Its tubular, bright red flowers are specifically adapted for pollination by hummingbirds. The plant forms an open, branching habit with slender stems and narrow, lance-shaped leaves, and it can grow up to 3–5 feet tall. Photographed in Florida.
