This species is native to both tropical Africa and tropical America, this perennial herb thrives in moist, shaded environments such as forest understories, riverbanks, and damp clearings. It grows upright or slightly trailing, with fleshy stems that root at the nodes when in contact with soil. The plant is adapted to high humidity and consistently moist conditions, making it a common sight in areas with frequent rainfall. The inflorescences consist of tightly packed green bracts from which small, delicate flowers emerge, each with three white petals and prominent yellow stamens. Photographed in Chocó, Ecuador.
