Two white Anemone decapetala flowers surround raised green centers and yellow stamens among finely divided foliage

Anemone decapetala

Native to Ecuador, Peru, southern Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina, this perennial herb grows from a tuber. It occurs in open grasslands and sparsely wooded places. Its white, petal-like sepals surround numerous stamens and a cluster of small individual ovaries; the flowers have no true petals. After flowering, each ovary develops into a one-seeded fruit. Long woolly hairs cover these fruits, giving the mature seed heads a fluffy appearance and helping with dispersal. Photographed in Peru.
