Alstroemeria aurea (Peruvian Lily)


Native to Chile and Argentina, this herbaceous perennial forms spreading clumps from underground rhizomes and fleshy tuberous roots. Upright stems reach about 3 to 4 feet tall and carry clusters of yellow, orange or orange-red flowers marked with darker streaks and flecks. Its leaf stalks twist, turning the leaf blades upside down. It is grown for cut flowers and can be propagated by dividing established clumps. Contact with the plant can cause an allergic skin reaction. It has naturalized in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
