Multiple clusters of Aleurites moluccanus flowers with creamy white, five-petaled blooms on a tree branch surrounded by large, broad green leaves
Aleurites moluccanus

Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, this species is widespread throughout Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, and has been introduced to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and Africa. It grows as a medium to large deciduous tree, reaching up to 65 feet in height in favorable conditions. The tree produces dense terminal panicles of small, pale white to creamy blossoms composed of five slender petals and prominent stamens, with flowering occurring seasonally depending on climate. It is widely cultivated for its seeds, which yield an oil used in varnishes, soaps, and traditional lighting, especially in Polynesia, Southeast Asia, and parts of India. The seeds, also known as candlenuts, are used sparingly in cooking after appropriate preparation to neutralize naturally occurring compounds. Aside from its oil-rich seeds, the species is valued in agroforestry for its canopy cover and ability to improve soil fertility. Photographed in Peru.
