Aeschynanthus speciosus

Native to southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo, this evergreen perennial subshrub grows on trees in humid forests. Its stems arch and trail. Terminal clusters bear yellow-orange to red tubular flowers about 2 to 4.5 inches long, with dark markings inside the lobes and long projecting stamens. The leathery leaves grow in whorls of three to six. Tiny seeds have a long hair at each end. The species holds the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Photographed in Florida.
