Aechmea blanchetiana (Orangeade)
Native to northeastern and southeastern Brazil, this large perennial bromeliad grows on the ground or on trees in Atlantic forests and sandy coastal vegetation. Its overlapping leaf bases collect rainwater in a central reservoir. The foliage ranges from green to yellow, orange, or red, with stronger color in sunny conditions, and has sharp marginal spines. Tall, branching flower stalks bear small yellow flowers and red and yellow bracts that remain colorful after flowering. Each rosette flowers once, then gradually dies as new shoots replace it, allowing the plant to form broad clumps. Photographed in Florida.
