Inflorescence of Aechmea 'Amarillo' with bright red bracts and clustered yellow flower buds in a tropical garden

Aechmea 'Amarillo'

This cultivated perennial bromeliad forms a rosette of stiff, spiny-edged leaves and produces an upright, branching flower stalk with red bracts and clustered yellow buds. Each rosette flowers only once, then gradually dies. New shoots, called pups, develop at its base and continue the clump; these can be separated to grow additional plants. Photographed in Florida.
