Macleania pentaptera
Native to Ecuador, this shrub grows in primary rainforests and premontane wet forests. Its branches can reach about 10 feet long. Flowers occur in small clusters, with fleshy orange tubes that become green toward their tips. The surrounding calyx has five conspicuous wings extending beyond its rim. Its sweet, edible berries are translucent whitish-green when ripe. It is also cultivated as an ornamental in botanical gardens. Photographed in Colombia.
