Hibiscus grandiflorus (Swamp Rose Mallow)
Native to the southeastern United States, this tall herbaceous perennial grows in wetlands, including marshes, ditches, and the edges of ponds and rivers. Plants can reach ten feet or more and die back to the ground during winter. Large, fragrant pink to white flowers open at night and usually last for one day. A succession of buds renews the display on new growth. Hawkmoths pollinate the flowers. Photographed in Florida.
