Hibiscus liliiflorus
Native to Rodrigues and historically Réunion in the Indian Ocean, this shrub or small tree bears large orange flowers. It grows on steep, rocky hillsides and is critically endangered. Habitat degradation, grazing and competition from invasive plants have reduced its wild population to very few trees. Conservationists propagate cuttings and seeds, plant nursery-raised offspring in protected areas, and fence surviving trees against grazing animals. Carefully managed collections help preserve the remaining genetic diversity. Photographed in Florida.
