Helianthus carnosus has a yellow sunflower head with long narrow rays surrounding a domed yellow disk

Helianthus carnosus (Lakeside Sunflower)

Native to northeastern Florida, this perennial sunflower grows in wet flatwoods and prairies. One or two upright stems carry relatively few leaves, with most of the smooth, narrow foliage clustered near the base. Large flower heads develop at the stem tips, combining yellow rays with a slightly domed center of yellow disk flowers. Narrow, pointed bracts overlap loosely beneath each head. The nearly leafless stems and yellow centers distinguish it from several other local sunflowers. Flowering occurs in summer and autumn. It is rare and listed as Endangered in Florida. Bees and butterflies visit its flowers, while birds and small mammals eat the seeds. Photographed in Florida.
