Amelanchier lamarckii (Juneberry)
Of northeastern North American origin, this deciduous hybrid shrub or small tree develops an open crown and may reach about 25 to 40 feet tall. White flowers appear in loose clusters as the new leaves unfold in spring. The edible berries ripen in early summer, and its foliage turns orange and red in autumn. It has naturalized in Britain, the Netherlands, and Germany. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. Photographed in Washington, DC.
