Dioclea guianensis
Dioclea guianensis is a climbing legume native to tropical regions of northern South America. The species produces showy racemes of deep purple to violet flowers that resemble those of other legumes but are larger and more vibrant. These flowers develop into flat, hard pods containing seeds that are buoyant and can disperse via water, a trait that allows the plant to colonize new areas along rivers and coastal zones. Photographed in Panama.
