Coleus barbatus is a perennial plant native to tropical Africa and Asia, thriving in warm climates. It is a member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is widely recognized both as an ornamental plant and for its medicinal uses. The plant produces striking vertical spikes of tubular purple to violet flowers, covered in fine hairs, which attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Its aromatic, fleshy leaves are often green with serrated margins and have been used traditionally in Ayurvedic and African medicine. The root extract contains forskolin, a compound studied for its potential effects on metabolism, blood pressure, and cardiovascular health. Photographed in Ecuador.
