Native to southern and eastern Africa, Tylosema fassoglense grows as a climbing or scrambling herbaceous perennial. The flowers open in clusters along the stems, each bloom comprising four slightly undulating petals with prominent stamens forming a star-shaped center; they appear in warm months and are held above paired ridged seed pods arranged vertically. Local communities use extracts from roots or stems in traditional medicine for treating fevers and inflammations; preliminary studies show some antimicrobial activity. Its pods develop prominently and can persist after flowering. Photographed in Florida.
