Mandevilla hirsuta is native to tropical parts of South America, from Mexico through Central America into Brazil. It appears as a slender woody vine that climbs by twining around supports. The flowers are trumpet-shaped with a yellow exterior and red “hearts” at the throat, forming elongated, tubular blooms typically several inches long. They may appear in succession for much of the year in the right environment. Distinctive hairs cover the stems and seed pods, giving rise to its specific epithet, and this hairy texture is notable in both the new growth and dried seed structures.
