Jagged Andean peaks colored with stripes of red, purple, and olive green seen beneath an ominous stormy sky in the Rainbow Mountain range
Rainbow Mountain, Peru

Rainbow Mountain, known locally as Vinicunca or the Mountain of Seven Colors, is a natural formation in the Andes of Peru, located southeast of Cusco. It reaches an altitude of around 17,060 feet above sea level and is famous for its vividly colored stripes that result from layers of mineral-rich sediment, including iron oxide, copper sulfate, and sandstone. The mountain was largely hidden under snow until recent climate shifts revealed its full spectrum of colors, attracting global attention and making it one of the most visited natural attractions in Peru.

Most travelers start their journey from Cusco and take a day trip to the mountain. The trip includes a 3–4 hour drive followed by a moderate hike that can take 2–3 hours each way. Horses and motorcycles are available for those who do not want to hike. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to September, when weather conditions are more stable and visibility is clearer.
