Sesbania grandiflora (Scarlet Wisteria)

Sesbania grandiflora is a small tree native to maritime Southeast Asia and New Guinea. Its compound leaves bear rows of oblong leaflets, and its large, curved flowers hang from the leaf axils. The photographed flowers have red petals and pale yellow-green calyces. Other forms bear white or pink flowers. The fruit is a long, slender pod. Its flowers, young leaves, and young pods are eaten as vegetables in Southeast Asia. Photographed in the Valley of Cauca, Colombia.
