Clusters of long red Fuchsia flowers hang among green leaves

Fuchsia petiolaris

Native to Colombia and northwestern Venezuela, this scrambling shrub grows in moist mountain habitats. Its reddish stems carry simple leaves with toothed edges, often with reddish midribs and margins. Hanging pink flowers have tubular bases, spreading sepals, and shorter inner petals. Pollinated flowers develop into fleshy berries containing numerous small seeds. In Colombia, it occurs between about 7,875 and 12,140 feet in the Andes. Photographed in the department of Cauca, Colombia.
