Calliandra trinervia var. carbonaria

Native from southern Mexico through tropical South America, this perennial tree can reach about 25 feet tall. Its compound leaves have large, narrow leaflets, and Colombian mountain forms have flower heads with uniformly red stamens. The pods turn from green to brown as they mature. In Colombia, it has been recorded beside streams in montane woodland between about 4,300 and 6,900 feet. It is also planted as an ornamental tree. Photographed in Bogotá, Colombia.
