Barichara is an attractive colonial town located in the Santander Department of Colombia. Known for its well-preserved architecture, cobblestone streets, and tranquil atmosphere. I believe it is the most beautiful pueblo in Colombia. Barichara is situated in the northeastern part of the country, approximately 12 miles from the adventure tourism hub of San Gil and 73 miles from Bucaramanga, the departmental capital, at an elevation of about 4,265 feet above sea level. Barichara has been declared a National Monument of Colombia due to its architectural heritage. The town features whitewashed buildings with red-tiled roofs and sandstone construction, especially visible in landmarks like the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción). Traditional artisanship thrives here, including stone carving, tobacco processing, and natural paper-making at places like the Taller de Papel.
The Camino Real, a restored colonial-era stone path built by the indigenous Guane people and later used by the Spanish, links Barichara to the nearby village of Guane, offering scenic views of the Río Suárez canyon.
