Located in the Antioquia Department of Colombia at an elevation of about 7,710 feet above sea level, Yarumal is in the northern section of the Central Andes. It is known for its colonial architecture, traditional Antioquian culture, and as a regional agricultural center producing coffee, beans, maize, and livestock. Yarumal is also known in the scientific community due to a genetic mutation found in a local population that has led to a higher incidence of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, specifically in the village of Piedras Blancas, part of the municipality. This has made it a focus of international neurological research.
