Xerochrysum bracteatum
Native to southeastern Australia, this annual or biennial herb belongs to the daisy family and can grow about 6 feet tall. It occurs in open woodland and forest, often on sandy soils. What look like petals are stiff, papery bracts surrounding a central cluster of tiny flowers. The flower heads retain their shape and color when dried, making them popular for dried arrangements and cut flowers. Garden forms come in several colors and sizes. It has been introduced to Colombia. Photographed in Colombia.
