Purple Vitex cymosa flowers form loose clusters on slender branches

Vitex cymosa

Vitex cymosa, known as taruma in Paraguay, is a deciduous tree native to tropical America, including Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. It occurs in lowland forests and on alluvial soils and may reach about one hundred fifteen feet. Its slightly fragrant flowers are tubular and two-lipped, with lavender to blue-violet coloring and a pale central patch. Flower clusters form in the leaf axils and near branch tips. The fleshy fruits contain juicy pulp. Photographed in Colombia.
