Victoria amazonica

Native to the Amazon basin, Victoria amazonica is a giant aquatic perennial rooted in the sediment of slow-moving rivers and floodplain lakes. Circular floating leaves develop raised rims and a ribbed, spiny underside. Large flowers open white and female, then become pink and function as male flowers before closing. Photographed in Colombia.
