Veitchia winin bears branching clusters of pale flowers beside abundant red fruits beneath drooping leaflets

Veitchia winin

Native only to Vanuatu, this single-stemmed palm can reach about 60 feet tall, with a slender trunk marked by closely spaced leaf scars. It grows in rainforest and seasonally dry forest, often on limestone or sandy alluvial soils. Its feather-like leaves can reach about 10 feet long, with drooping leaflets and a pale green crownshaft. Large, repeatedly branched flower clusters bear separate greenish-white male and female flowers on the same palm. The oval fruits ripen red and measure about half an inch to one inch long. Photographed in Florida.
