Vanilla planifolia pale yellow-green orchid flowers and buds growing from a thick climbing stem

Vanilla planifolia

Native from Mexico through tropical America, Vanilla planifolia is a fleshy climbing orchid that anchors to trees with aerial roots. Thick green stems carry broad succulent leaves and clusters of pale yellow-green flowers with folded trumpet-shaped lips. Elongated seed capsules develop after pollination and are the principal commercial source of natural vanilla flavoring. Photographed in Colombia.
