Tillandsia secunda violet tubular flower extending from glossy dark red bracts

Tillandsia secunda

Native from southern Colombia to Ecuador, Tillandsia secunda is a perennial bromeliad that grows on trees or rocks in seasonally dry Andean habitats. A large rosette of stiff leaves supports a tall branched inflorescence. Dark red bracts surround narrow violet flowers, and small vegetative plantlets may form along the spent flower spikes. Photographed in Colombia.
