Thespesia grandiflora

Native to Puerto Rico, Thespesia grandiflora is an evergreen tree of humid tropical forest and disturbed ground. Large deep red to purple-red flowers have five broad overlapping petals and a prominent central staminal column. The species is known in Puerto Rico as maga and its flower is an official territorial floral emblem. Photographed in Panama.
