Theobroma speciosum

Native to the Amazon basin and adjoining tropical South America, Theobroma speciosum is an understory tree whose flowers emerge directly from the trunk and older branches. Dense clusters contain vivid red flowers with long narrow structures and projecting pale filaments. The fruits enclose edible white pulp around seeds related to cacao. Photographed in Colombia.
