Theobroma grandiflorum

Native to the Amazon basin, Theobroma grandiflorum is an understory tree cultivated for cupuaçu fruit. Flowers arise on older branches and have pale hooded petals surrounding dark maroon reproductive structures. The large fruits contain fragrant creamy pulp used in beverages, desserts, and preserves, while the seeds can be processed into a cacao-like product. Photographed in Colombia.
