Tamarix smyrnensis
Native from southeastern and eastern Europe to Pakistan, it is a deciduous shrub or small tree of saline shores, riverbanks, and dry open ground. Slender branchlets carry tiny scale-like leaves and narrow sprays of pale pink flowers. Specialized glands on the leaves excrete salts onto their surfaces, an adaptation to saline ground. Photographed in Florida.
