Taganga, Colombia

Taganga is a small fishing village located in a bay on the Caribbean Sea, approximately 15 minutes northeast of Santa Marta, in the Magdalena Department of Colombia. It is nestled between dry coastal hills and the sea and is surrounded by parts of the Tayrona National Natural Park, offering a scenic and arid landscape with cactus-strewn slopes. The village has become a popular destination for backpackers and budget travelers, known for its affordable scuba diving schools, with easy access to dive sites in the nearby Tayrona park. Despite its small size, Taganga has developed a lively nightlife scene, especially on weekends, with bars and hostels catering to international tourists. While it retains aspects of its traditional fishing culture, tourism is now the primary economic activity. The main beach, though not considered pristine, is a hub for boat departures to Playa Grande and other nearby beaches only accessible by boat. Taganga has faced challenges with overdevelopment, water shortages, and occasional safety concerns.
