Syzygium cumini (Java Plum)


Syzygium cumini is an evergreen tree native to tropical and subtropical Asia and now cultivated widely through the tropics. In Colombia it is recorded as a cultivated species from about 150 to 2,430 feet in Andean and Caribbean regions, including Cesar, Cundinamarca, and Valle. Its dark purple to red fruits are edible and have long been used for food and traditional medicine. Photographed in Colombia.
