Symphyotrichum 'Wood's Purple'

This cultivated hybrid aster is a compact perennial herb that grows about 12 inches tall. Dense clumps of dark green foliage produce violet-purple flower heads with yellow centers in late summer and autumn. It attracts butterflies and suits sunny borders, edging and containers. The above-ground growth becomes dormant in winter. Photographed in Florida.
