A tropical American shrub in the acanthus family, Stenostephanus haematodes grows in humid forest understory and mountain vegetation. Long dark red tubular flowers curve outward from leafy stems and end in narrow lobes with projecting pale stamens. Broad opposite leaves have prominent veins and pointed tips. Flower clusters emerge near the upper leaves. Photographed in Florida.
