Stenorrhynchos speciosum

A terrestrial orchid native from Mexico through tropical South America, Stenorrhynchos speciosum grows in humid forest clearings and mountain habitats. A dense upright spike carries many red tubular flowers among overlapping pointed bracts. Broad leaves form a basal rosette beneath the conspicuous flowering stem. Individual flowers open progressively along the spike. Photographed in Colombia.
